Custom-made Sports guards
A mouth guard is a flexible, plastic device, which is used to prevent injuries to the teeth, mouth, tongue and jaw. Any athlete that plays a sport may be at risk for sustaining an oral injury and most injuries can be prevented with the use of proper protective equipment. Boston Center for Oral Health offers custom-made “Sportsguards” for both children and adults who participate in contact sports.
When should Sportsguards be used?
In physical contact sports like football, hockey, lacrosse, wrestling, and boxing, where the risk of injury is more likely, protective mouth guards are often mandatory. Children and adults that are involved in sports such as basketball, baseball, softball, soccer and volleyball might consider wearing a mouth guard to prevent injuries to the mouth as well. Unfortunately, the majority of dental injuries occur as a result of participation in non-contact sports when Sportsguards are thought to be unnecessary.
What are the preventative reasons for getting a Sportsguard?
Custom mouthguards for sports help prevent:
- Chipped or broken teeth
- Fractured crowns or bridgework
- Lip and cheek injuries
- Root damage to the teeth
- Fractured jaws
- Concussions
What does getting a Sportsguard involve?
Sportsguards are custom-made from the exact model of your teeth, which provides an added layer of protection that generic sports mouth guards are not able to achieve. The entire process is quite simple and involves a patient coming into our Back Bay dental office for bite impressions, which are taken using a plastic tray and putty. Patients are able to personalize their Sportsguard by selecting custom colors and designs before our dentists send the impressions out to the lab. Once fabricated, patients will receive their custom-fit mouthguard. The device is made from a resilient and tear-resistant material, which will ensure a proper and comfortable fit.
